PhytoLab

System design and simulation

A modular platform for plant monitoring, intervention, experimentation, and long-term biological research.

The starting question

What would it take to treat plant cultivation as an observable, testable system rather than a collection of habits and isolated devices?

The system

PhytoLab is designed to collect environmental and plant-level data, record interventions, and preserve enough history to compare outcomes. The long-term direction includes automation, phenotyping, controlled breeding experiments, and eventually genetics research.

The first prototype intentionally narrows the physical scope to one plant while retaining the measurements and interactions the larger platform will need. Simulated events make the reasoning testable before hardware adds another layer of uncertainty.

Design principles

  1. 01

Begin with a small but complete experimental system.

  2. 02

Treat measurements as evidence, not isolated numbers.

  3. 03

    Record interventions alongside outcomes.

  4. 04

Validate decision logic through simulation before depending on hardware.

  5. 05

Keep sensors and actuators modular enough for questions that do not exist yet.

Current status

The single-plant prototype, initial measurements, physical interactions, and modular plot model are defined. Current work is focused on simulation before selecting the first physical components.

What it demonstrates

How a long-horizon idea can begin with a useful experiment today without trapping the architecture needed tomorrow.
